How Germination Works

T-bud - Dig out buds from trees. Make sure to cut deep enough to expose the green layer under the bark; the cut should extend about three-quarters of an inch above the bud.

Choose a good location on the host tree. Ideally, you want to graft onto branches or saplings that are between a quarter and an inch in diameter, and find a spot as far away from any existing buds as possible. If necessary, trim off any shoots within six to eight inches of the transplant site.

Make a vertical cut about an inch long where the buds will be placed. Make a horizontal cut at the top of the branch or one-third of the trunk - you've created your T. Now carefully lift the bark on either side of the T stem with a knife and slide the scion into the cut.

Chip buds -- which cut the scion in the same way, but instead of cutting the host's bark into a section the same size as the scion -- the closer to match the size, the better. Slot the bottom of it to hold the transplanted bud in place, then place the scion in cutting and pruning until the green areas of the two match as closely as possible. Bind with tape or rubber.
